ESR13, Abhishek Dubey presented a short paper titled “A Review of Recent Advances in the Combustor and Blade Cooling Methods for Pressure Gain Applications” at the Joint Meeting of International Workshop on Detonation for Propulsion (IWDP) and International Constant Volume and Detonation Combustion Workshop (ICVDCW) held at TU Berlin. Co-authors of the paper are ESR14, Sreenath Purushothaman, A. Sorce and A. Traverso (TPG UNIGE). This paper presents a review of the recent advances in the gas turbine combustor and blade cooling methods in order to identify the most promising thermal management solutions for pressure gain combustion. Cooling effectiveness for blade cooling are discussed and innovative cooling concepts such as propellant injection cooling, pulse impingement cooling and bladeless turbine are also addressed. Additionally, the development of cooling models for cycle analysis and the cooling-associated performance losses are also investigated. Read more

ESR12, Panagiotis Gallis presented a short paper titled "Development and Validation of a 0-D/1-D Model to Evaluate Pulsating Conditions from a Constant Volume Combustor" at the Joint Meeting of International Workshop on Detonation for Propulsion (IWDP) and International Constant Volume and Detonation Combustion Workshop (ICVDCW) at TU Berlin. The work is focused on the 0D/1D simulation of the peculiar Constant Volume Combustor developed by Pprime Institute aiming at evaluating the fluctuating stagnation conditions after the chamber. These results will be employed for the 3D-URANS CFD numerical analysis of the exhaust section and will pave the way for a re-design of the transition duct able to appropriately feed a subsequent High - Pressure Turbine Stage. On June 27 Prof. Andreini has opened the 6th edition of the Summer School on Advanced Research in Turbomachinery (ART2022) The school has been inaugurated by the keynote of Prof. Richard Sandberg (in the photo) in the unique venue of the Sant'Apollonia abbey in the city center of Firenze. It is a real pleasure to host again at Università degli Studi di Firenze almost 50 students in person, who will learn and share experience on the most advanced research topics in Turbomachinery. ESR 14, Mr. Sreenath Purushothaman, presented a paper titled ‘A Review of Pressure Gain Combustion Solutions for Aerospace Propulsion’ at the ASME Turbo Expo 2022 in Rotterdam (Paper No: GT2022-83799), during the session Pressure Gain Combustion and Component Instabilities, on June 17,2022. This paper was a comprehensive review of PGC technology solutions applied in the area of aero propulsion, covering the historic as well as ongoing research activities at the component level, the cycle level, and the propulsion applications of Pulse Detonation Engine (PDE), Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE), Oblique Detonation Wave Engine (ODWE), Free Piston Composite Cycle Engine (FP-CCE), and wave rotor engines. The analytical, numerical, and experimental research work is reviewed, providing also a comparison of PGC engine conceptual designs with existing gas turbine engines used in aerospace propulsion. This research activity was conducted at TPG UNIGE with Avinash Renuke, Alessandro Sorce and Alberto Traverso under the framework of INSPIRE MSCA-ETN Project. Read more

Nicola Detomaso is among the winners of this year ASME Turbo Expo Student Advisory Committee Travel Award (SACTA).

Nicola Detomaso, under the supervision of Thierry, Florent and Davide Laera, is among the winners of this year ASME Turbo Expo Student Advisory Committee Travel Award (SACTA). This is an award given by the ASME International Gas Turbine Institute (IGTI) student committee that recognizes the best students based on their scientific and management contributions to the student committee and the AMSE conference itself. In fact, Nicola is the lead author of a great paper that has been (already) accepted, with very positive comments from reviewers, for oral presentation at the upcoming Turbo-Expo to be held in June in Rotterdam. He also served in the conference organization as member of the "student review group" and he has been recently selected as student liaison for the IGTI and newly member of the SAC committee.
